Duncan Smith: Chairman

Favourite Player: John Newcombe in the 1970s – He was one of the few men’s players who was ranked world number one at singles and doubles, winning seven singles and seventeen doubles titles at major championships. In the modern era, you must admire Roger Federer.

Favourite Shot: Probably my serve, twenty-five years ago!

One (or two) things not many people know about me: Life-long AFC Bournemouth supporter, watching my first match against Northampton in 1967. I am still a season ticket holder and the last ten years have been a bit of a roller coaster. Many of you will know I am a qualified accountant, but I also have a diploma in holistic massage.

"I started playing tennis when I was 12, on public courts in Bournemouth.

My wife and I moved to Marcham from Cheltenham in 2000. A member from the Club met my wife at the VoWH Tennis Centre and encourage her to join the KBS ladies’ team and we both started coming along to Sunday morning social doubles. Ten years ago, I stepped in on a temporary basis to cover Nigel when he retired as KBS Chair and then in the summer of 2017, Pete Osman and I discussed building new courts and it has taken over four years to secure new leases, obtaining planning permission and raising the funding required. It is exciting to see the construction teams on site and this year, we will have secured a sustainable, high quality tennis venue at the heart of our community. We have a very committed Committee overseeing our Club and I would encourage members to get involved.

Looking forward, I really enjoy playing golf and my personal challenge, post Covid lockdown, is to get my handicap down to a respectable number and when my wife retires, spending more time in the south of France, where we have a small bolthole opposite a twenty-eight-court tennis centre."
