AUGUST 2008 NEWSLETTER:

Club Finals Day, 13 July 2008

A fine, sunny day and a good turnout of spectators provided the ideal setting for our Finals Day this year. Seven events in all were contested and, once again, there were some closely fought matches and high-quality tennis on display. Special mention should be made of the Boys’ Singles between Matt Haywood and Alex Sheard, which Alex eventually won in three sets and the Men’s Singles, in which last year’s junior winner, Greg Miller, took on the reigning champion, John Palmer, in a thrilling three-set battle; experience ultimately prevailed over youth and John retained his title but it can’t be long before Greg gets his hands on this trophy! Congratulations to these and all the other finalists for giving us such enjoyable tennis throughout the day. Among the various trophies presented by the Chairman at the end of proceedings was the special award for the “Most Improved Junior”, which this year – on the recommendation of club coach, Andy Aitken – went to one of our younger juniors, Jake Moon. That the day was a success was in large part due to the many volunteers who umpired or acted as line judges and provided off-court help with refreshments etc., notably Karen and Pete Osman for their excellent BBQ, Sue Moon and Derek Clements for running the raffle, Meriel Lewis for the advance publicity and of course Alison Jackson who supervised the draw at the start of the tournament. My thanks to all of them for their support. Full details of the results are given below and are also displayed in the clubhouse; a selection of photos will also be posted at the club and on our website.
